We're OFF! Driving to the Arctic Ocean from Moses Lake, WA - through B.C., Yukon then into NWT. Will be taking the
Dempster Highway - driving through Dawson City, Eagle Plains, Ft. McPherson, crossing the Arctic Circle then onto Inuvik and ending at the Arctic Ocean in Tuktoyaktuk. A swim will be in order.

We've been planning this for several years now and today is the day. 2500 miles one-way, the last 500 miles is a federally (Canada) maintained gravel/dirt highway.

We've taken an old Ford van and outfitted it with everything we need. Gone through all of the systems and suspension. Two spare tires, and a carry along battery pack. Oh, . . . and some bear spray.

We'll be back in time for the Sep 10 game against Baylor. We'll be taking our time, no hurry, hiking and fishing along the way and expect to see deer, elk, possibly caribou, black bears and grizzly bears. Maybe a cougar or two. A polar bear could be a possibility, but unlikely. The last one was seen wandering through town in Tuktoyaktuk about 6 years ago.

Bringing along a light fishing pole hoping to catch a few of whatever will tug on a line in streams along the way.

Of course - several BYU shirts and my go to Y hat are part of the expedition wardrobe. Maybe a gear count will be part of the trip 😃 Mostly camping but will stay in hotels 3 nights and mostly cooking our own food along the way.

Will have our phones with us and should have reception when we're near cities as we get farther north. Will check out the possibility of getting a sat phone for a few days of the farthest north days when we get to Whitehorse or one of the other larger cities up north.

Our longest stretch with no gas available is 250 miles.

Wish us luck or call us crazy — or ignore this post and move onto more realignment discussion — whatever. It's just HCBW and me. All of the kids and grandkids are excited (and/or worried) for us. A few are jealous. They've figured out some social media thing for us to keep updating all of them hour by hour, day by day.

It's going to be great! . . . . . .we hope!

One sentence prayers appreciated.

Estimated departure time — 1030 PDT.

🙂
