We had a great road trip to Eugene. The parking situation is garbage and we had to park about 20 mins away, but the walk was fine and it was neat to see their facilities. We walked by some tailgaters and got a couple "Welcome to Eugene" and "Good luck today" comments.
The game itself was terrible, but it was a good college football atmosphere. We were about 4 rows up so we had great seats. I was pretty disappointed in the quality of the stadium. They make Autzen stadium look amazing on TV (especially during night games), but it was pretty rundown. Decent food and decent overall experience though.
As for the chanting by the student section, I heard it happening but I couldn't make out what they were saying. No biggie - glad to see they apologized. I'm sure it was just a few bad eggs and it went too far. I'll admit the best part of the fan experience is playing Shout by the Isley Brothers at the end of the third quarter. The entire stadium (including the players) got into it. Really fun to watch - even though we were getting throttled. The silver lining is we got the best of their second string defense after that. Right? Right?
Another sucky thing...most of the BYU fans were near the top so it was difficult for the BYU cheerleaders to engage with them. BYU fans were quiet...like, very quiet.
Things didn't get bad for us until the end of the game. Some Oregon fans started shoving the win in our faces. Okay, they won - I get it. When we started to leave a few people said "Thanks for coming" and "Good game"...which was cool, but we got a few "Where are you going???" and "You heading home to your wives?" comments as well. Some guy kept shouting "BYU hates (gay slur)!" over and over again.
The walk back to the car was a bit of an adventure. Lots of stupid fans yelling at us out their car windows. One guy was yelling at us about BYU hating gay people while he was on his bike - and almost got hit by a couple of cars. That was pretty funny.
Overall it was probably one of the more negative experiences I've had as a visitor - but it wasn't so bad. I would say most fans are great, but it felt similar to going to a game at RES. A few bad apples ruining it for the rest of them.
Go Cougs! Hopefully we bounce back.
