He was pretty disappointed, but life happens.
He made alternative plans and decided to enroll at UVU, where he is currently a freshman. After licking his wounds from the BYU rejection, over the summer he had gotten excited about his next steps at UVU.
Then about 3 weeks ago, not long after he has moved to Orem for school, BYU reached out to him and said, "Congratulations! We'd like to offer you admission starting in Winter 2023." A couple observations:
1. Is this a new practice? I hadn't heard of this before, where a university changes its mind and proactively reaches out to a former applicant who was already denied admission many months prior. But maybe BYU has been doing this for a while.
2. On the one hand, it's nice that BYU is offering opportunities to kids who might want them. But on the other hand, I think it's a bit weird and maybe even inappropriate to keep dangling admission to a kid who is already moving on with other opportunities. As in, "BYU, you had your chance, just let the kid move on." I'm of two minds about that.
Anyway, my nephew told BYU to pound sand.
EDIT: A large factor in his decision to stay at UVU is that taking a closer look resurrected his desire to pursue aviation. UVU has a good program in aviation, and BYU obviously has no such program. Maybe things will change after his mission.
