Holker transfer thoughts
1) I’m a bit perplexed in the timing. I know he wants to preserve a redshirt, but this is likely the last year for both Hall and Rising. It’s clear as day that Rising loves to target the TEs WAY more than Hall does. Maybe the Utah O scheme/playcalling facilitates this, but Wilson/Rex proved that BYU is also a very TE friendly scheme. Maybe it’s Grimes vs AR that’s the issue for Holker. But why not see what Conover and others would do vs a unknown/unproven QB elsewhere?

2) If you were to ask me preseason, or even currently, to list out the top most important players/contributors on this BYU team, Holker wouldn’t even make my top 20. I think there are at least 10 linemen that I’d list over him. He’s been in the BYU system 3 years and has never broken into being a starter or taken on a “so good you can’t ignore him” role with the copious live reps he’s had… even with rolling with the first team’s practice reps all off season due to Rex’s injury.

3) I feel for the kid. He’s got NFL potential, but hasn’t lived up to it. Not sure how much of this to blame on the system, coaches, on Hall, or on Holker himself. I hope he reaches his potential and makes the NFL. I’m not sure a change in teams will get him what he wants, but maybe. I do agree that this is potentially a much bigger gain for him personally than it is of a loss for the BYU program.

4) Sure it hurts to lose quality depth and a solid player like Holker, but it’s about as easy of a position to fill holes in for BYU as any other. Between what’s in the recruiting pipeline and BYU’s storied TE tradition this one isn’t a game changer for BYU.

5) Hate it if he goes to the Utes as is expected. I know plenty of players have gone both ways, but it just feels wrong to do so. I will cheer for him to drop every ball while he wears red. Nothing personal Dallin, I’d do the same for any other Ute. Hope you simultaneously drop every pass and still figure out a way to make an NFL squad… rivalries/loyalties are weird that way.
