Been twice in the last year including taking my wife for her first visit. You will be fine. Don't spend too much time in the French Quarter, it's good for a solid day but too many people spend their entire time there. Use the trolleys, visit the garden district and spend a solid day up at city park and all the museums, plus it's the best place to grab beignets as the cafe du monde in city park is way less busy and a nicer place to enjoy them.
