His client caused the accident, but sued because I was in a company vehicle. It ended up being a lose lose. We ended up paying a very nominal amount to make it go away, but the settlement was much less then they had to pay in legal fees.

Settlement. Insurance deductible is $25K, so they aren't being that magnanimous.

The alternative would be to go ahead and fight it. If a case has no merits, fight it and win at sum. judgment

Problem is that these cases are generally filed in federal court. Federal Courts don't generally award fees that often.
