BYU’s brand is built on having big-time sports in a family-friendly environment.
Take a look around LES, the Marriott Center, or any other event for that matter. It’s different than any other university. Kids and families make up a significant part of the fan base and attendance. Lots of people become sports fans because BYU offers a way to enjoy athletics without the rowdiness of other environments. No alcohol, no topless co-Ed’s, and, yes, no foul language appeals to the sensibilities of a lot of those moms and dads in attendance. Anybody who thinks otherwise needs only look to Rice Eccles and see the cultural divide within the same State.

So I’m kind of surprised that some BYU fans want to kill the golden goose. Get rid of the honor code to boost recruiting, welcome the foul language, maybe we can even sell beer to boost revenue! We may get some short term gains from those changes, but I guarantee that if we became like every other program we’d whither within a decade.
