I rarely criticize officials,...
I once was coerced into officiating a church basketball game. I was an unpaid, untrained volunteer. I had played a lot of basketball in my life, including some small college ball.

It was a horrible experience. I wasn't very good at it, and I knew I wasn't very good at it. The players were complaining incessantly, even though they knew I was "voluntold" for the assignment.

It was such a frustrating experience that I took my whistle off at halftime, laid it down on the scorer's table and left the game.

Now having said all that, those who officiate major college football and basketball games are well-compensated, well-trained (supposedly), and experienced. They should take some heat when they consistently make obviously incorrect calls. They are paid to get it right. There were several calls last night that were clearly wrong and indefensible.
