Yes. This was about 10 years ago, and the hiring manager was also a prior boss. It was incredibly difficult to go
back on the job offer, but my current employer made me an offer I couldn't refuse. When I explained the situation to the hiring manager, who was a former boss that I loved, he was actually very supportive. Said he would do the same thing, and you have to do what you feel is right for your family. We are still friends today.

I had signed the offer letter, even had a badge and was scheduled to start in a week.

I'm still at the same employer I decided not to leave, and plan to be here until retirement. Everything worked out great, and am so glad I didn't take the new job.
