I tried them in a few different houses with different wiring situations and never did much better. It could be the specific model I used wasn't any good, but I've read this being a problem for other people trying to use powerline as well.

You can buy a cheap router connected to a 100' ethernet cable you could string

If you can do an ethernet cable run from your router to your garage, that's always going to be the best option.
