3/4s of integrated systems in this country are under water right now, many significantly so. I saw a report yesterday that many are in initial phases of layoffs…particularly in the support service areas of operations.
Systems that are largely hospital based are in the deepest trouble. Under value based care, hospital led systems are suffering and will continue to suffer. These orgs have to pivot to diversify or will die.
Intermountain branding is a shift and signal saying they recognize this and are pivoting to population health, primary care, and most likely realizing hospital beds are not the wave of the future.
You will see them rebrand and many others as competition and consolidation and diversifying is going fast and furious right now and for the foreseeable future as the industry moves further into value based purchasing.
