BYU D plays a lot of 3 vs. 5 and 9 vs. 11
It's not hard to see why they struggle against the run.

Quite often the alignment will call for the D line to play 3 on 5 at the line of scrimmage. That might work if they had Georgia or Alabama level talent but they don't. So it's a numbers game that leads to an automatic 3 - 4 yards. But what makes it worse is the fact that the linebackers are spread out (often maybe only 5 or 6 BYU defenders in the "box") and are seemingly slow to read the play and react. Rarely, if ever are there run blitzes or instinctive plays where a LB will attack right off the snap of the ball. At this point I have to believe that they're coached not to do that.

But that's not all, BYU always plays two high safeties 10 - 15 yards off the ball who are basically a non-factor in a running play until the runner has already picked up a significant gain.

The frustration as a fan is you could see from the stands after two or three plays that Utah State was going to keep doing the same thing over and over. The adjustments should have been made after the first drive.
