It depends on where you live.
In the Bay Area, you would be nearing the poverty line if your total pre-tax income for your family was $100k. To get by on that amount, you would likely be living in a lower income area—most likely in rent-controlled housing, and you would have to make some big lifestyle adjustments (one car, no luxuries, no savings, etc.)
