Ode to Hoy The Truffle Shuffler
Hanging with my mom again today while I WFH. I have been sitting with her and
asking about her life when she was younger and recording it.

She shared a pretty cool story today that I did not know of.

My mom and dad lived in Kettering Ohio from 1968 to 1976 (I was born in Kettering while they were there). While there my mom worked for WHIO (Radio Station) in Dayton, Ohio. Her job was to be the assistant scheduler. She would help put together the schedule of interviews that would be coming into the station on a given day. Part of this she was also able to be in the room for whoever was coming in to interview.

I asked her if there was anyone famous that came in that I might know.

She rattled off the below list:

Larry Linville (Frank Burns on M.A.S.H). She said he was so polite and friendly.
Vincent Price. He was polite and cordial and friendly.
Robert Reed (Dad on The Brady Bunch). She said he was great and friendly.

The one that floored me was when she mentioned that Muhammid Ali came into the station for an interview.

The producer came to her team and asked if anyone would like to join the room for the interview. None of her co-workers would go as they were upset that he would not be drafted into the Vietnam War. My mom felt many of them were just racist in their views as they had gone into other meetings of white individuals that had dodged the draft.

My mom was ecstatic and wanted to be there so she said of course. When she walked into the room she looked around and noticed that she was the only white person (there were at least 20 other people in there and everyone was black). Several people thanked her for being there but she said her biggest regret was not going up and shaking his hand. She said she was a little too nervous to do that, mainly because, in her words "He was one good-looking man". 🙂

I did not know this story but was neat to hear that my mom, despite her team disagreeing with her, chose and wanted to be in there. She told me that she knew even then the historic impact Ali was going to have for years to come.

Pretty cool story and I learned more about my mom than I did before.
