Hotlanta Intervention Needed
Why is Dune just... so freaking weird? Spoilers obviously

I just read the book for the first time and it's just so utterly bizarre. Not like different, or unique, or anything normal. Just bat-crap psycho.

There's a lot of awesome world-building. The Bene Gesserit and the spice and the worms and the Fremen, etc. are great. The core of the book is political machinations. It's all very simple.

But there's also just so much over the top bizarro things that make the book impossible to comprehend. The Bene Gesserit aren't just manipulative, they can experience things past generations did, and Jessica sees these past visions because she drinks the (vomit? Idk) of a dead sandworm and has a vision? And her unborn child also develops this same 6th sense? And can then communicate with dead reverend mothers? And living ones too? As a toddler.... just... what?

And Paul can literally see the future all of the sudden and sees time folding in on itself. And on and on

The entire story is building up to the revelation that the Fremen religion is a sham, orchestrated by the Bene Gesserit. Then it just... turns out to be true? Paul spends the first 2/3rds of the book avoiding the notion that he is their messiah, but then goes all Zionist and makes the prophecy come true. This random group of backwoods nomads just happen to be the chosen people, despite the religion being guided by the Missionaria Protectiva? So they guided the religion to reality?

I just... don't know what to make of the story. I really liked the not psycho parts, but I have absolutely no desire to read the next books and how Paul's son becomes a human-worm hybrid.
