SinkingQuffa Intervention Needed
Grades for the Dayton game. (Upon further review.)
A: Gideon George (Guy played within himself, fulfilled his role, & did a little of EVERYTHING. Both ways. His competitive edge was off the charts — in a way that was not matched by another player from either team.)
A-: Dallin Hall (If he hadn't whiffed on 4 consecutive FTs in crunch time, he'd be right up there w GG. What a game!)
B+: Richie Saunders (This kid's release on catch-n-shoots is NBA worthy. What a motor, too. He quietly neutralized, basically, the performance of Dayton's Mongolian Phenom.)
B: Rudi Williams, Fouss Traore, Jax Robinson (I hope I'm not short-changing any of these guys by putting them here. In my mind, it's a matter of relativity. These guys all played their guts out both ways all night — & on D, Rudi & Fouss had particularly impactful nights down the stretch. And if you watched the game's overtime ending you of course couldn't have missed Jaxson's ice-in-the-veins shooting to seal the deal for us.)

As the announcers both said several times as the game was winding down, BYU had no star in this game (though Dallin & Gideon certainly made their cases). All six of the main rotation players played remarkably well in order to notch this rather incredible win over a tough, Dance-bound opponent. The Flyers VERY nearly advanced past Wisconsin in their first-round match — the same Wisconsin team that ended up beating USC pretty convincingly. This Battle for Atlantis had a very solid 8-team selection. Yes, we probably lost to the worse team there in Butler, but Butler obviously is not a bad team at all. I'd love to have that game back for the simple reason that our team clearly turned a corner in the 2nd half against Dayton. Losing SJ in the closing 5 minutes of the Butler match was obviously tough to adjust to — & continued to be tough into the Dayton game.

That said, I expect pretty big things from this group from here on out. I know some of us have been down on Rudi because he's not working out at PG like we'd hoped — but really, this kid is NOT a bad player. And he plays pretty dang well alongside Dallin if you hadn't noticed. What I like best about Rudi, though, is he gives us the quick, athletic guy who can hang with just about any smaller PG out there. His matchup against Nembhard gives me hope we just might have a chance against Creighton (& hopefully we get SJ back to guard Schierman). Rudi doesn't have to be our PG, of course, to guard the opposing PG. When it comes right down to it, Rudi is a level-headed leader who plays his guts out on D, regardless. He was NOT a whiff as a transfer pickup by any stretch.

From what I can see, Coach Pope has himself the sorta locker room we've had problems maintaining the last couple years. This is gonna be a real fun team to watch.
