Pope didn't likely let Bernardo go. BYU forced Pope to cut him when it made Pope
shoulder the scholarships of all our active players for his first two years.
Well, with the exception of Emery — who they allowed him to cut, & also Colby Liefsen (who thankfully hadn't yet started classes, so it appears they let Pope release him to UVU's bench rather than occupy a spot (& a schollie) on ours).
Rose signed Bernardo (& the Chinese kid) only when he realized Yoeli wasn't coming back.
But, as we know, Pope changed that history a bit, thank heavens.
Keeping Bernardo would've required we not sign Barcello or Toolson in 2018. Which I'm pretty sure everyone agrees was NOT a course Pope should've taken.
In a perfect world, though, I'm sure Pope would've gladly enlisted Bernardo — at the expense of someone like Seljaas or Lee.
Guys they cut:
1. Emery
2. Liefson
3. DaSilva
4. Chinese kid
5. ?

1. Barcello
2. Toolson
3. Childs (brought him back, anyways)
4. Harward (as RS transfer)
5. Lowell (as RS transfer)
