We don't pay a cent for our kids' cars, but we do give them an ebike
We also don't pick them up. They figure it out. Two have made good use of the bikes and bus transit, while the third bought her own car, and pays her own insurance/gas. We would let them borrow the family car for those 11 p.m. things mentioned above ... and also during Dec-Feb when it's super cold and if they had a super late night event. They had to carpool/share the family car during those months if there were two teens at the time.

It has been great for my BYU daughter who is two years in at BYU and still doesn't have a car because she is confident in her ability to function pretty well without it.
