On Friday night, we went out as a family to dinner and afterwards we decided to
go to Luv-It for some frozen custard. For those of you unfamiliar with Luv-It, it is an old place in Las Vegas that makes great custard and sundaes, but is in a seedy part of town. The area is shady, but I've never had any problems there except for seeing drunk people acting kind of stupid.

Anyway, we were pulling into the parking lot and there was a couple crossing in front of us. The guy was walking closer and closer to the front of our car until he almost brushed against it with his leg. I thought it was really weird that he was getting so close. When he cleared the front bumper, he turned and began walking down the passenger side of the car, still super close. Of course I was watching him closely now, but also noticed that the girl was behind him and still in front of our car. He walked to the rear passenger door, where my 3 kids were sitting, and tried opening it. I quickly hit the gas, not caring if the girl was still in front of the car, to get my kids away from this dude and I stopped.

I'm not a violent guy, and I don't really even have much of a temper. But when I saw this guy trying to get into my car, specifically where my kids are and for who knows what reason, a switch flipped in my brain. I was seeing nothing but red. I was unbuckling my seat belt so I could go medieval on this fool. My wife pled with me to just drive away; my kids were terrified (they're 10, 9, and 6); I was livid. And this guy just kept on walking like nothing had happened, but he didn't leave the lot. My wife convinced me to just pull into a parking space for a minute. We parked and I cooled down a little bit (a very little bit), but I was watching this couple the entire time.

It became apparent that he was very drunk. The moment had passed and things had kind of cooled down, and I told my wife that I would go get the sundaes we came for (Luv-It only has a walk-up window). The couple was standing against the wall, and as I got in line I watched them...waiting, almost hoping for any provocation that would justify the beatdown that I still wanted to deliver. The girl recognized me as the driver and asked the guy to apologize. He claimed he didn't know what he was doing because he was drunk. I gave them no response. I didn't want their apology. They ended up walking away after that, but I watched them closely the entire time they went, still waiting for a reason...

In hindsight, I'm glad my wife talked me down in that moment. I think of how much worse the situation would have been if, on top of the fear that the kids were feeling in the moment, they saw their dad beat up a drunk guy half to death. As it turned out, nobody was harmed, except that the kids may never want to go to Luv-It again. And that is probably the most egregious damage that the drunk guy inflicted on us as a family.
