he's visiting SMU tomorrow. So he leaks it before to Brett McMurphy to make sure it's crystal clear he's going there and that he's going to invite them. Why do this? What is he trying to get out ahead of here? Why not just go do the visit and then leak after the fact?

He's always said numerous times "expansion only comes after the TV deal". So why is expansion seemingly coming before the TV deal? What changed?

This doesn't feel like a pre-planned step, it feels reactionary. So what is he reacting to?

Lot's of unknowns here, but let me delve into a few rumors that came up last week. We know the PAC12 Presidents met. There were rumours that some schools were not happy and not on board with what was presented. Specifically ASU was rumored to be openly frustrated. And now we hear that GK's taking steps to add expansion teams and he's leaked that info to McMurphy.

Now my conjecture... ASU and Arizona (they're a package deal) told him they are leaving. Before the Arizona/ASU news hits GK needs to get out ahead of it. GK can't wait on the TV deal and has to add schools now! He is going to SMU to get everything confirmed and turned around ASAP. When the Arizona/ASU news hits damage control will be ready.
