Like most distance runners I hate speed workouts. Started marathon training last Monday and did my 1st speed workout today.
I've never been a treadmill runner but bought a new treadmill a couple months ago, mostly for my wife. I thought I'd use it here and there. Found out after the fact that for any custom program I have to write the code myself using XML (learned what that even was last night).
Last night I wrote code for a 2 mile warm up, 3x400 with 200m rest, 2x600m with 400m rest, then 2x400 with 200m rest, then a 2 mile cooldown.
This morning that program worked flawlessly on the treadmill while I watched Only the Brave on DVR.
Had never heard of the movie but it was the perfect testosterone laden film to push me.
The whole experience from learning a new skill; to actually having the program work; to having a workout I hate, just happen, if I kept my legs moving; to watching a pretty good movie, to running on an awesome treadmill was nirvana.
We've had a treadmill in the past that I used maybe 10 times in 10 years. I much prefer running outside but with all the snow/rain we've had this winter I've been running on that thing 3-5 days/week since November and it is awesome. I haven't had icicles on any part of my body all winter.
I realize this is dumb (probably why my wife didn't understand why I was so excited when she got up this morning) but I've seriously gotten a smile on my face all day every time I think that I wrote a computer program that actually worked...and that I only have 15 more speed workouts to go.
