is of equal magnitude. The key is knowing this about yourself and surrounding yourself with people that might limit the negatives that result from your strengths. And being willing to listen to these people.
The PAC's greatest strength has been their commitment to the idea that they are elite and bound together by a sense of superiority. After all, these are highly prestigious AAU research institutions. The PAC 8 was born in 1968 (55 years ago). This has made the group very stable and committed to each other, their sense of Academic superiority and the idea that somehow this Athletic conference made up of Research institutions did in fact make them Champions (albeit not in Sports that matter in the modern age).
It's very hard to part from a group that makes you feel better about yourself and superior to those around you. Even in the face of unavoidable death, you might be willing to just go down with the ship (Utah).
But make no mistake, there is a very big weaknesses that has been exposed in the PAC. It required a dramatic shift in Media to bring this to the surface. Cord cutting has forced Media Partners to seek Brands that actually produce eyeballs. No longer can they collect money from random non-fans who subscribe to a TV Package. No longer can they just focus on large Metro areas alone.
The PAC could have added many great brands over the years. But these were truck stop schools and Mormons not worthy of inclusion into the club. Had they done this, they would have expanded into valuable TV windows instead of staying isolated into 1 TV window with the least engaged fans in the country. They would have brought in engaged fans from other parts of the country to watch their teams play in their late windows and would have more opportunities to grow their brands by exposing their teams to fans in the Central or Eastern time zone.
It's a little too late now. Adding the cultural misfit of MSU won't fix these problems. San Diego State still occupies the same Pacific Window which does nothing for them in the short term. They will probably band together, but when the ship goes down there will be 4-6 causalities who will be relegated.
