I agree that the start and end of a vacation can be stress filled, but it sounds like he's making it way more complicated than it needs to be.
My vacations are what keeps me going. I work long hours, and I feel at times that I live vacation to vacation.

Maybe his wife needs to feel like she has control to avoid unknowns. Some people don't deal well with unknowns.
