Canzano on the Puck & Jim Show today. Another great one!
Canzano joins the Puck & Jim Show in Seattle every Tuesday. Here's a summary of what he said today (with a link to the audio below).

Q. What do you make of the three PAC Presidents who spoke out on the record last week?

A. They validated what I’ve been saying for the last 6 or 7 months. My message hasn’t changed. What has changed is that the Presidents and Chancellors, who should have been speaking out all along, are finally helping themselves by speaking out. Credit to the Yewt’s Harlan for starting the whole thing by taking a shot at Dodd. It appears that the PAC’s messaging is now a coordinated effort, complete with media coaching and talking points. PAC fans should be feeling better this week about the future of the conference.

Q. What’s the hold up for a media deal?

A. The PAC was not in as big of a hurry to get a deal done as the rest of us. To the Big12’s credit, they made the PAC look bad by re-upping with Fox and ESPN, which happened fast. The PAC is dealing with new partners in Apple and Amazon. I liken the delay to the ease of renewing a gym membership versus opening a new gym membership. Renewing is far less complicated than starting a new relationship. The PAC will come in above the Big12 number of $31.6 million in annual distribution. In turn, the Big12 will move the goal posts by highlighting total distribution, including NCAA tournament units and college football playoff revenue. A true apples to apples comparison will reveal that the PAC’s Tier 1 and Tier 2 rights will be above $31.6 million. The PAC is not gloating, but they feel good about their potential deal. The deal will ultimately be with ESPN (Tier 1 rights), Amazon (1 game a week), and Apple for PAC12 network content, together with licensing/monetizing of data to BetMGM or similar.

Q. What do you make of the rumors regarding Rice as an expansion candidate?

A. If you listen to the academics, i.e. the Presidents and Chancellors that run the show, academic and cultural fit are the primary factors for expansion followed by media value. Here, Rice is an academic and cultural fit. Rice might be the rumored 4th school under consideration (i.e. beyond SDSU, SMU, and CSU) for expansion. Adding SDSU, SMU, and Rice would bring in 18 million new tv households, which is greater than what was lost with the departure of USC and UCLA. Rice would be a travel partner for SMU.

Q. If the PAC only adds 2 teams, and SDSU is a “slam dunk,” what is SMU?

A. SMU is a "layup." SMU’s alumni base is highly motivated to get into a P5 conference, which will not be the Big12. SMU may be willing to forego distributions for several years or even pay an expansion fee. If so, that closes the revenue gap with the B1G and SEC.

Q. What is the future of PAC basketball?

A. Much greater investment, including bigger budgets for charter flights, recruiting, etc. If you look at other conferences that got more teams in the NCAA tournament, they’ve largely flamed out in the tournament. In other words, the PAC is just as strong of a basketball conference, but perception of their weak OOC schedule is holding them back from getting more teams into the tournament. The PAC schools are rooting for UCLA to beat Gonzaga, because each game will produce $2 million in revenue, which will not be distributed to UCLA. However, many PAC fans want to see Gonzaga win because they consider UCLA to be traitors. The PAC needs an OOC scheduling partnership with another conference to increase its NET rankings.
