On today’s edition of the Puck & Jim Show on Seattle sports radio, Canzano addressed PAC expansion, the pending media deal, and even BYU. Here’s a summary of his relevant comment (to listen to the full audio, there is a link below):
Q. The tv deal or expansion? Which one comes first?
A. The CEO group was cleared to explore four candidates, with a focus on culture, academics, and geography. Once the candidates meet these criteria, THEN, they pivot to the media partners and ask if each school adds value to the media deal. If they don’t add value to the deal, they don’t come into the conference. This means the PAC could only add 1 school, like when the B1G had 11 schools years ago after adding Penn State. SDSU is a foregone conclusion.
“One of the mistakes I thought the Big12 made is they got a little bit out over their skis. They were in a little bit of a panic after Texas and Oklahoma left... They add Houston… They add BYU… I think those were really smart additions. But, adding Central Florida…made no sense [also implying that Cincinnati made no sense]. You look back and think, yeah they got into the East Coast Time zone with it, but I don’t think the PAC presidents will be that reactive… If they take both SDSU and SMU, it’s because it’s a no-brainer. They won’t take anything that isn’t a no-brainer.”
