I’ve had plenty of friends who played for BYU. The academics were easier for them vs a normal BYU student.

Due to their sport work load… they told me they pretty much were give a guarantee that they (the athlete) would be middle of the curve or higher due to being on a team. Just as long as they showed up to class and did their assignment. But go a head and ask the student athlete on Stat 121 class of the difference of a type 1 error vs a 2 type error. They’ll still get the answer wrong and still graduate.
