If the Jazz take a bad contract into space and adding picks a good candidate is
Ben Simmons.
I know many will say that they never want anything to with Ben Simmons, ever. I totally get that. But there are some reasons to add him.
- The guy will be playing for his NBA future over the next two years. If he’s doesn’t play well he’ll be out of the league.
- If he can come back to 80% of what he was, that’s a 6’10” PG who can defend anyone in the league. And is a double double threat (rebounds & assists) on a nightly basis.
- Utah needs a facilitating PG and can space the floor around Simmons.
Now the real reasons why it’d make sense to do a deal for Simmons:
- BRK has valuable picks to attach to him. The ‘27 picks from PHX, PHI, and the ‘29 picks from PHX and DAL are all potential lottery picks if the stars are old or leave those teams. If they’d attach any 2 of those, they’d be excellent trade chips in the future. The Jazz could also ask to move from 28 to 21 this draft as part of the deal.
- If the Jazz want to trade for a star they need some matching salary to make a deal happen. Simmons makes 37M and 40M the next two years. If a team was wanting to trade a star for draft capital, the Jazz would have plenty and could use Simmons as the matching salary.
- Simmons deal comes off the books the year Lauri needs to get his new max so he doesn’t affect long term roster building.
Why BRK would do it
- Joe Tsai is over Simmons and would like to have him gone.
- They need out of the tax with their current roster, and need to be able to pay Cam Johnson, getting off Simmons allows them to do all of that.
- BRK could view themselves as a free agent/trade destination and not need draft capital the same way they need financial flexibility.
- Trading Simmons into cap space creates a trade exception they can use on another player at the deadline or next off season.
- They owe all their picks to Houston, they have no benefit to tanking and rebuilding through the draft.
I think the deal that makes it worth it for the Jazz and BRK is something like
