BYU is on right track with transfer portal. It is the future
BYU had a special need to use the transfer portal this year. Entering the big 12 and exiting the prior defensive coaching staff, it made for a special need. However, it should also serve as a template moving forward, maybe not 20 transfers per season, but a significant amount.

Here is the template: first priority, recruit your LDS base and get the best players out of high school. Second priority, win the state of Utah. Utah is an up-and-coming geographical area and if we can get the majority of the top 10 to 15 players, we will be well served. Third priority, use the transfer portal significantly to get the players and the type of players that are not part of priority one and priority two. It is the future as long as the rules are what they are, and using it will particularly help BYU.

The thing about the transfer portal in addition to filling needs, you will have a lot less misses than recruiting high school kids. These will be guys that have proven themselves. With high school kids, even LDS kids and kids from Utah, there will be misses. But that can be managed by being more particular with the high school kids, taking less projects, and then filling needs through the transfer portal.
