Fun Perspective from a Former Utah Quarterback
I went to BYU for my undergraduate and MBA degrees and have checked CougarBoard multiple times per day on average for decades, but I have rarely posted. The last two days I've been in Nashville attending and speaking at the Pro Players Prayer Project. It's a conference of Christian current and former athletes (even though I was not a collegiate or pro athlete). Speakers included Tim Tebow, Dan Orlovsky (former NFL quarterback for 12 seasons and ESPN commentator who recently prayed on air for Damar Hamlin), Jim Zorn (former NFL quarterback and coach, and Boise State coach), and many more. It was an amazing group of godly men and women who were kind and welcoming. I'm a podcaster, so they set up an interview studio and asked me to interview athletes they brought me about faith and prayer in their lives and careers. One of the amazing athletes I interviewed was Brett Ratliff, the University of Utah quarterback during 2005 and 2006. He went on to play for the Jets, Jaguars, Patriots, Browns and Buccaneers. While with the Jets he turned his life to God, and for the last 10 years he's been a minister. I was very impressed with him and the interview, and what he's done with his life. It was fun to hear his perspective of leading Utah to victory over BYU in overtime in 2005 and then, in 2006, how he led a drive to take the lead with 1:19 on the clock, only to have John Beck throw one of the greatest passes in BYU history to Johnny Harline on his knees all alone in the end zone after the clock had expired to steal the game. He said that the joke at Utah after that game was that "The only way BYU can beat Utah is on their knees." It's interesting to see things from the other perspective, how some of our greatest moments are some of the greatest disappointments to other great people. And, all of you would have liked him if you would have spent time with him last night. A lot of people we think are "the enemy" would be our great friends if we got to know them 1 on 1. Have you had a similar experience getting to know an adversary and becoming friends?
