Trevin Knell is an objectively AMAZING 3-pt shooter, and he is even BETTER when the rest of the team struggles. [data]

For some reason, Trevin Knell has been the target of ongoing criticism from some on this board for no rational reason. First, Knell was critiqued as disappearing in big games.  That was put to rest by a variety of posters.  Then, in order to hold on to the irrational dislike, the criticism shifted to suggesting that Knell is bad in games decided by <10 points.

Well, after being sick for the weekend and having nothing better to do, I decided to fact-check these claims.  Turns out, this newer critique is also wrong.  I pulled Knell's data and the team data for the last 2 years.  I filtered out the crap games (per critique #1) and only included Big12 + hard non-conference games.  I also filtered out the couple of games where he was injured last year.  Here are the results:

Looking at the data above, we can see that Trevin's performance is nearly identical to the rest of the team's, except for when BYU gets beat by a lot.  For some reason, he is one of the only ones who shows up in those games.

However, there is one game that stands out as perhaps deserving some extra consideration: the Cincinatti game from last year.  BYU lost that game by 11 points.  What happens if we shift our criteria to set the boundary at: Lose <= 11 ?

Alternatively, you could look at Knell's total 3pt% in the above games: 40%

You could also consider his % in games they won (40%) compared to games they lost (39%).

In the end, what becomes clear is that Knell continues to shoot well unless you get down to some very specific, small-sample-size result to fit a specific negative narrative.  The entire team (as one would expect) performs a little worse in tighter games.  This includes Knell, but it does not include ONLY Knell.

For those who feel compelled to criticize specific players for our losses, it's time to find a new scapegoat.
