My BYU Belt Buckle

I got this belt buckle about five years ago for $20 off eBay. Beleive it or not I was the only bidder. I've worn it more often than not since then.

I've received numerous compliments and queries as to its origin. All I know is that I bought it from a lady in Payson. I have a coworker who is pretty sure that her grandpa had one just like it but she has been unable to find anything about where it came from.

My request for the vast knowledge base that is Cougarboard: does anyone know where these buckles were produced and what were the circumstances? On the back it says "limited edition" so that leaves me to believe that several were produced and it wasn't made by some guy in his garage. Were they produced and sold to the public or were they distributed as gifts to a select few?

Any info would help to quench my curiosity.
