If you read his various books, you'll find out he's way into Eastern mystic beliefs. He tries to explain his belief in different angles in different book. I once read one of his meditation books, and its content and methods are directly out of Hindduism, based on my knowledge.
Yes, now I do see some similarity there with LDS beliefs after you explained it, and he might indeed have some LDS background, althought I still doubt it. His teaching right now is far from the current LDS teachings, since he almost never mentions sins, savior, and divine authorities here on earth. His teaching of universal spirituality and harmony with nature is more of a Buddhist approach than LDS approach.
