LaVell Edwards is a Hall of Fame coach who built BYU from a team that regularly lost to Utah State and couldn't compete with Arizona or Arizona State to a national powerhouse that won a national title and a Heisman trophy.

Bronco is a good coach who maintains an already strong program, but hasn't developed it further from where it was in LaVell Edwards' day. The progress that Boise State, Utah and TCU have made in comparison to where they were during LaVell Edwards' era shows that BYU is treading water at best and in danger of receding if it can't get to the BCS as an Indy or become competitive in a Top 6 conference.
