Why do you think the coaches and players are doing nothing?
Seems like you don't have any idea what the players and coaches are doing during the off season. I can tell you that the workouts right after Christmas break are some of the toughest of the whole year. January may be the most intense month of the year, from a conditioning standpoint. I promise you that the minute the coaches could get their hands on the players again, they started kicking their butts.

From what I've seen of the BYU program, January is probably the month where the most players quit, because the workouts are extremely challenging. Nobody is sitting around right now. The average day right now consists of something like 2 hours of weight training and 105 minutes of conditioning, which consists of agility drills and technical drills, topped off with between 1 and 1.5 miles of sprinting, usually in the form of some kind of gassers (20x 100 yd gassers, or 12 x 200 yd gassers, or some combo of 50s, 100s, 200s, etc.). After all that (or before) most of the players stick around for some 7 on 7 work without and coaches present. There is no relaxing going on right now.
