My experience with the honor code office
leads me to agree with everything in your post.

I was sitting in the student section of the south endzone at the game against San Jose St in 2011. There was about 4 minutes left in the game and it was pretty much decided by that point. Most of the students were getting pretty bored and many started throwing paper airplanes. If you've ever attended a game at LES, I can pretty much guarantee you've seen someone throw a paper airplane at some point of the game.

It's a pretty harmless practice, and there were probably hundreds of paper airplanes that had been thrown at that point. But I was the unlucky one that was made an example of. I was sitting in the seat closest to the aisle and I took the piece of paper that I printed off for my student ticket and folded it into a paper airplane. The BYU rent-a-cop must have been waiting for me to throw it because the second I let go of the thing he grabbed me by the shoulder and escorted me out of the stadium. He took my student ID and told me I could come pick it up at the campus police station on Monday.

My student ID was already expired so I went and got a new one the next week hoping the whole situation would go away. Of course it didn't. I started getting calls and emails from the campus police a few days later telling me I needed to come get my student ID and sign my citation. I told them I was never told I was being cited for anything and I was only asked to leave the stadium, which I did. They said I was cited for disorderly conduct and would need to come sign the citation.

I went in and met with one of the sergeants on the BYU police force and explained the situation to him. He said the citation had already been processed by the Provo justice court and I had no choice but to appear for an arraignment. And of course, because it was the BYU police and I was a BYU student, they reported it to the honor code office.

So I ended up having to go to court, pay a $100 fine, and meet with an honor code counselor all for a yewting paper airplane, and because some BYU rent-a-cop suffers from Little Man syndrome.

The county prosecutor and honor code counselor both said I wasn't the only person that was cited for throwing a paper airplane.

A PAPER AIRPLANE.

I didn't do anything with any malicious intent. I didn't hurt or disturb anyone. I wasn't given a warning. I THREW A PAPER AIRPLANE.

If these are the types of things that they are really concerned with, then I completely agree with you. There is very little honor in the Honor Code.
