I would rather they follow the EU model where there are penalties for delays.
This holds the airlines accountable without messing with your existing reservation. The airline is still obligated to get you to your destination and they get to pay you for the pleasure of having you on board. I had 3 delays on Air France on a two leg trip home and came out 88 euros ahead of what I paid for the flight.
