I don't think player movement in the NBA is as common as it seems.
Only nine of The Ringer's top thirty players (link at bottom of post) have left in the way we usually talk about when it comes to player empowerment. Eight of them were traded at least once following a demand, and Lebron left 3x in free agency. Fifteen are still with the team that drafted them, and another six either a) were traded without asking for it, or b) left at a time when they were not a max-level player (star).

1. Jokic - Still with the team that drafted him.
2. Doncic - Still with the team that drafted him.
3. Antetokounmpo - Still with the team that drafted him.
4. Gilgeous-Alexander - Traded for a star.
5. Embiid - Still with the team that drafted him.
6. Leonard - Demanded a trade once, left in free agency once.
7. Tatum - Still with the team that drafted him.
8. Curry - Still with the team that drafted him.
9. Durant - Demanded a trade once, left in free agency once.
10. Davis - Demanded a trade once.
11. Booker - Still with the team that drafted him.
12. James - Left in free agency three times.
13. Brunson - Left in free agency once (for a non-max contract).
14. Edwards - Still with the team that drafted him.
15. Butler - One trade demand, one sign-and-trade, one regular trade.
16. Wembanyama - Still with the team that drafted him.
17. Haliburton - Traded for a star.
18. J Murray - Still with the team that drafted him.
19. Mitchell - Somewhere between his team choosing to trade him and him demanding a trade.
20. Williamson - Still with the team that drafted him.
21. George - Asked to be traded twice.
22. Fox - Still with the team that drafted him.
23. Adebayo - Still with the team that drafted him.
24. Sabonis - Traded twice, but never asked to be traded.
25. Brown - Still with the team that drafted him.
26. Lillard - Asked to be traded once.
27. Towns - Still with the team that drafted him.
28. Markkanen - One non-max sign-and-trade, and traded for a star once.
29. Ingram - Traded for a star.
30. Irving - Two trade demands and left in free agency once.

Guys that asked for trades: 8 (including Donovan Mitchell here)
Guys that left in free agency (but were never traded): 1
Guys that either a) left their team for a non-max deal, or b) were traded but didn't ask for it: 6
Guys that are with team that drafted them: 15

Had to cut it off somewhere, but FWIW 31-35 includes four guys that are still with their original team, and another (Gobert) that didn't ever really ask to be traded.

Players are going to keep asking for trades and/or leaving in free agency, but I don't think it is as bad as it seems, or that it is as bad as it was in 2019, when six of the nine guys that I mentioned who have left in the player empowerment ways switched teams (which to be clear, wasn't the only time for many).
