mine came from a channel about budgeting in retirement, and the fact that about 30% of what you buy ends up in the
garbage. Typical meal serving size for packaged mixes, or just regular recipes is not set up for couples.

Example. Say you want to make meat, bean and cheese burritos.

In my version you need

flour torillas (12 pk) 9 remaining
12oz can of refried beans + small can green chillies heated (6-8 servings) 5 servings
1 lb of meat + taco season mix packet (6-8 servings) 5 servings
tomatoe (chopped) (6 servings) 3 servings
onions (chopped) (6 (servings) 3 servings
shredded cheese (mexican blend, small bag) (6-8 servings) 5 servings
sour cream (12 oz squeeze - keeps longer) (8-12 servings) 6 servings
taco sauce (12oz) (12-20 servings) 9 servings

Now, lets say between the two of us we make and eat 3 burritos, lets look what is left over, basically at least another full meal, and sure I can cut the tomatoe and onions in half and use them for something else, or freeze frozen onions for later.

But the point here is people don't routinely like to repeat meals that frequently, so the tortillas and cheese might get used for cheese quesadillas, and the sour cream added to chili or something. But again, it's a discipline thing that our generation really doesn't have engrained in us. And things get in the way of good intentions for eating those leftovers. This week after feeding the missionaries tacos (lots of these same fixings), 3 missionaries and our single widowed neighbor plus us two, and we had at least enough to feed 6 more people.

But that was monday, we figured we'd eat it later this week. Tuesday we had a youth group at the welcome center. Wednesday we ate in town before heading home because we left late. Last night we went to the temple in Star Valley so got something just as we arrived in Afton. So for all our good intentions, our leftovers have gone uneaten. And that is the premise of the video and how they get their calculations that in most cases, depending on where you eat, and how much you order, eating out can be a better deal than shopping and bringing home groceries. And part of that is that some groceries are purchase and NEVER used. A bag of salad mix sits and goes bad, peppers or tomatoes go bad... on and on
