Needs to be said whenever something like this is posted. Too many people see it, confirmation bias kicks in, and they
think a big danger for them, that they would prefer not be a danger. is no longer a danger.

Years ago my SIL told my ginger nephew (not her kid) that he shouldn’t use any kind of sunblock with SPF greater than 15 because it will give him a chemical burn and is more likely to cause cancer than the sun.

She’s the most naturally-melanated person in the family so she uses stuff like that and doesn’t feel or see much burn.

For this ginger kid, SPF 15 isn’t going to get it done for a day outside.

Tried to tell her that the risk of a “chemical burn” is probably negligible for almost any sunscreen, but not all sunscreens use the same chemical or mechanism anyway even though the SPF scale is used for all of them. An oxybenzone sunscreen and zinc sunscreen may both be SPF 50, but they’re nothing alike chemically, so you can’t use the number to say that they’ll both “burn” this kid.
Neither will. But the sun absolutely will if he goes out all day with weak sunblock.

This is when I was informed that she is a “medical professional” so she knows better.
