Why would I want to feel better about it?
You will notice that I am not a fan of BYU's corporate culture. I think it unnecessarily limits BYU's success. I don't think this kid has done anything that should prevent him from attending BYU.

If there is one area that I am bothered about in this specific case it is efforts by his posse to get BYU to offer him. His father's explanation is false and modified by a lie wrt their intent to commit. I am making my case that such efforts are likely to discourage Mendenhall from offering, even if the kid and BYU come to a conclusion that his behavior has come into alignment with BYU's Byzantine world view, based upon my assesments of Mendenhall's personality. Once again that personality trait is also open to criticism from fans for being excessively stubborn, but I offer my opinion that said stubbornness is part of why I think he is successful.

So my feelings are thus:

Bad about BYU not offering as the emphasis on purity is a needless success limiting action. Good that the posse is more likely to piss Mendenhall off than bring him around to their perspective.
