RE: On Porter Gustin
First things first. We need Porter Gustin more than he needs us. Last time I checked, his official offer list has 25 teams that are ranked higher than BYU. I have a friend VERY close to the Gustin situation and I had to make the phone call tonight to find out what was really happening. Bottom line is this kid has QB offers, numerous MLB Offers, OLB Offers, Illinois and ASU offered him at TE, and even DE Offers. I got the following numbers from a real source that verified everything is legit. He's 6'5, 237lbs, runs a 4.69 40, jumps like a gazelle, Benches 360, Squats 470, Cleans over 300 Lbs, hits like a mack truck, plays multiple positions, and works harder than any athlete around. He is officially at 25 offers and will get three more BIG TIME offers tomorrow. From what I gather, Sark USC, and Fisher FSU, and Whittingham U, and Anderson Wisconsin, and every other head coach throughout America see this kid as an immediate impact player at the very top schools in football. It is expected that Porter could end with over 50 offers. You don't get offered by FSU, CAL, USC, Oregon, Wisconsin, Washington, Louisville, LSU and on and on and on without being special. Just go to the top 25 teams in the country and you will see that he has offers from or high interest from every single one of them. He is a freak. Watch his film. He has a nose like Urlacher and refuses to lose. He was just named a 4 star player but from what I gather will be a 5 star player shortly based on his incredible national exposure and measurable indicators.
Now to the real ISSUE so we don't have to speculate...
I also asked about the type of kid he was. He is described as Big, Shy, and Coachable. He is 17 and does what other 17 year olds do. Has he made mistakes? I think he probably has, just like 99% of all 16-17 year old kids have. He has never been convicted of a crime, doesn't accept mediocrity, is described as a leader, and has increased the confidence level of those he plays with. His coaches love him and respect him beyond measure. Don't read more into this than is there. BYU is in a tight situation with Scholarships. We know the number is very low. We also know the Backer position is over its allotment already. They can't offer everyone and its possible our staff made a mistake. A huge mistake. So instead of push the kid away, would someone please tell him we love him. 5 Star LDS kid from Salem Hills is too close! I know the window is closing or maybe already has closed on him even considering BYU but I would rather offer him and have him say NO then to not offer him at all. FIND ROOM! It is true. The kid did want to play for BYU but can we really blame him for gravitating towards these other programs??? I hate the speculation. Truth is the kid is more than worthy to play for BYU in all aspects!
