Who cares if he "isn't Des Bryant" or is "small," "skinny," or has "No NFL potential?" If BYU only recruited recievers with Dez Bryant-type athleticism and size then the only receiver they would have recruited the last decade would be Ross Apo. The question that matters is: could he help BYU win college football games? We all know the list of football and basketball players who were great in college but didn't make it in the pros. Do you wish that BYU hadn't recruited Cody Hoffman because for whatever reason he never made an impact in the NFL? He was a great college player, that's what matters. Some guys are just built for college like Tebow, Jaycee Carroll, Jackson Emery, Max Hall, Bradlee Van Pelt, and maybe Luke Staley (could have been injuries in his case).
Covey won't play in the NFL, but there is a good chance that without him the Utes don't beat Utah State, because he had a huge punt return and a couple of key catches. He also kept some drives alive against Michigan and kept that game from being much closer than it was. Covey has only played in 4 games and has already had a huge impact in every one of them.
If he had gone to BYU, the Michigan game is still a loss assuming he wouldn't have scored 31 points on his own. However, it is definitely possible that he could have made 3 or 4 big catches or a big punt return that would have been the difference in the UCLA game. That is why people are frustrated.
