Agree for football and some other sports. But mental sharpness/instincts also take recovery time. Age is less a concern
in the NFL than in the NBA.

Missions have a decidedly negative effect on elite basketball careers in most cases. The odds for post-BYU professional basketball careers favor those who did not serve missions.

So to generalize, in sports where being is better physical and mental condition than opponents matter most, missions pose more disadvantages. Where physical, emotional and intellectual maturity matter more than tip top conditioning, it may be a net positive.

Nevertheless, if called to serve, go forth.
