it shouldn't be surprising. Your credit history provides your score. If you
close the account, then the part of the formula which looks at long term stability ceases using that credit line as part of the formula. Your score drops as a result.

I know when I cancel my AMEX cards they prorate my annual fee and refund me the portion owed.
