teams because of the brutish, unskilled style of soccer they played, dependent on defense and physicality rather than actual soccer skill. My hatred for Germany was cemented in the World Cup semifinal game they played against France in 1982. Not only did the German keeper almost kill one of the French players with a brutal foul, but they beat in penalties a wondefully skilled France team that played beautiful soccer, and deserved to win.
That was also the World Cup of the infamous "Anschluss" game between Austria and Germany, in which they colluded to both advance in their final group stage match against each other, knocking out the Algeria team that had beaten Germany earlier in the tournament. It was despicable.
That game is the reason that the final groups stage matches of all World Cups and most FIFA tournaments are now played concurrently.
