KMFA is am excellent 24-hour classical music station out of Austin. You can stream it here http://www.kmfa.org/ . They also have an app you can stream on your phone.
I'm really sad to see Classical 89 shut down. That said, I'm not completely surprised. In my opinion, they fell short in a few key areas:
- News. Don't need it on a classical station. There are tons of new sources. I go to classical radio to get away from the news.
- Context. The Classical 89 announcers generally provide very little context or background for the music they play. For classical radio to succeed, the announcers must become storytellers that bring the music and history to life for the audience.
- Disconnected. Classical 89 always seem a bit disconnected from the happenings in the concert music community in SLC. More interviews with conductors and musicians centered around upcoming musical events would have been awesome.
In spite of these issues I have, I still love Classical 89. I've been a donor for the 6 years I've been in Utah. I've raised these suggestsions with the station on a number of occassions, and they never responded. Here's hoping that something can fill the gap sometime down the road!
