But none of BYU's potential hires come to BYU because it's the Big XII. They come because every single candidate (outside of Madsen) is in a position that even WCC BYU would be a step up. The short list here is essentially as follows: P6 HC at bad basketball school, P6 assistant at bad (post-sweater) basketball school, mid-major assistant, NBA assistant with very little college experience. That's the list. The next options are guys like "local HS coach" and current assistant who lost 70% of his games the last time he was a HC. Our pool is very shallow and even WCC BYU would be a step up for every single name on the list not named Mark Madsen.
Chances are high that we will in fact not "have a good coach." We will have someone who is very unproven and likely would not get a sniff of most P6 head coaching jobs if not for his affiliation with the sponsoring religion. There is no way that even Chris Burgess gets strong consideration to become HC at a school like Oklahoma State, ISU, etc. if those schools had to find a new coach tomorrow.
