I just listened to Steve Cleveland, who should probably get some respect for his opinions about BYU basketball, rave about Quincy Lewis on a radio program. At length.
I get that we all want a coach with a certain type of pedigree as the head guy at BYU. And, our pool is limited. That doesn't mean we need to doubt the intelligence, competence or ability of the candidates in the pool who have all been coaching basketball for a long time.
Guys like Barrett Peery, Quincy Lewis, Adam Hiatt - all really good basketball coaches. A former HS coach just won two national championships in college back to back.
We want a guy that can bring us championships - but, then we fret and moan about a coach like Lewis who has won a state-level championship at the high school level NINE TIMES. "Oh, but it's not the same . . . " - how many championships did Mark Pope win before becoming BYU head coach? One - as a player. None - as a coach. A guy like Quincy Lewis would be just fine, and I would support him as the head coach.
