It would be overcome fairly easily.
The biggest issue is he plays a position the USMNT doesn't use. He basically has to play in a back 3, he's too slow to be in a back 4. When he went to Portugal he got benched for basically a year in his prime because they play a back 4. All of his success has come in a back 3.
The us plays a back 4 and he certainly isn't good enough to change the whole team structure for. He's probably good enough to be in the discussion for the 4th-8th best CB in our system (who are all pretty similar IMO), but the personality issues probably move him to the bottom of that list.
The idea that the coach is cutting off his nose to spite his face is hyperbole by the Berhalter-out crowd.
