The truth is that BYU's defense was awful
at the beginning of the season and there are rumors that Hill pretty much quit during that Utah State game.
BYU's defense went from a serious weakness to a strength almost immediately after Hill was gone.
Utah State didn't play against the same defense that the Utes saw a month later.
